In Joseph Wright's famous 1768 painting, a "natural philosopher" pumps air our of a glass vessel to create a suffocating vacuum in which a white cockatoo flutters in panic. The provincial Wright excelled in the rendering of candlelit scenes, following in a long tradition from Caravaggio to the Dutch Realists.
