Swallow Court Project

In 2002, I worked for three months as a caretaker in Swallow Court, part of the Whitehawk Estate in Brighton.

Whilst not sweeping and scrubbing, I made some work, including:

  • Photographs of the four ‘bird’ blocks, Falcon, Swallow, Kestrel and Kingfisher.
  • A pack of playing cards bearing the names of the four blocks, constructed into a house of cards.
  • A found camera, and the subsequently developed film.
  • A film made up of sections of CCTV footage from Swallow Court, overlaid with a incidental narrative recounting the time that I encountered two people with the name Alan at the same time.
  • An abstract film using cleaning materials to create faux-dust/mushroom clouds.
  • A reclaimed television on which to show the two films.
  • Newspaper clippings detailing news related to the area.
